Water and fertilize abundantly in the growing season. Once the plants have flowered and leaves have fallen, water should be reduced or stopped until new growth develops enough and produces long enough roots. If watering is resumed too early, new roots will stop their growth.
A slow-release fertilizer may be sprinkled on the media to ensure adequate fertilizing in active growth.
