In the Japanese Fūkiran Meikan, Seikai (青海) is one of the most highly prized and historically iconic Neofinetia falcata (wind orchid) cultivars. Cultivated since the Edo period (1603–1868), it is famously classified as a mameba (bean-leaf) variety. Believed to have been preserved through hand division since the 1600s, this ancient cultivar is often regarded as a true “living antique.”

‘Seikai’ is prized for its distinctive mameba (bean leaves), elegant Wankyokuba (curved leaves), and unique Namigata Tsuke (wave-like leaf attachment pattern). Its name, meaning “ocean wave,” reflects the iconic Japanese wave motif associated with this variety. Unlike the typical downward-facing white flowers of many Neofinetia, ‘Seikai’ produces uniquely shaped, upward-facing flowers with a delicate pink tint.

As a sterile cultivar, ‘Seikai’ cannot be reproduced from seed. Every plant in cultivation comes from generations of division, preserving its rare lineage and historical significance for Fūran collectors.
